Analysing Media Language in Music Video

Carol Verallis argues that music videos have far more edits
than in films. They stand out as disjuncture and the edits have a rhythmic
basis which is connected to the song. Her findings in observing music videos
are summarised below:
- There isn’t continuity editing. This is so that the viewer draws their attention to what is on the screen.
- The edits in the music video are obvious so we focus our attention on the performer. Examples are wipes and special effects. Jump cuts are also used
- Base track are used so that the video has a structure.
- Cameras are often move in time with the music.
