Research: Andrew Goodwin's Theory

  •  Music videos do not necessarily follow a film like structure
  •   They don’t need to include a chronological beginning, middle and end
  •   Music videos include the artist as both the narrator and the character
  •  The singer often looks directly at the camera to include the audience
  •  Repetition is used to represent verses and chorus’
  •  They are edited to the beat of the song
  •  Reflect song – builds to a climax/constant repetition, fades away

Music videos can be placed into three categories based on their narrative structure:

Illustration
Videos tell the story of the song, sticking closely to lyrics, often using dance
e.g The Script – The Man Who Can’t Be Moved

Amplification
Videos don’t contradict lyrics but don’t follow as closely. Add new layers of meaning
e.g Justin Timberlake – What Goes Around

Disjuncture
Lyrics and video share little meaning or contradict eachother
e.g McFly – Room On The 3rd Floor
