Social networking sites have become increasingly important to musical artists nowadays, as it has such a large audience in which to promote their music/videos to.
Lily Allen is an example of this. She used the now disappearing 'Myspace' website to promote all of her music. She built a massive fan base, which in turn allowed her to sell more records.
On 'Myspace' you were able to edit various things - such as: your mood, profile, apps and blog. By updating these regularly, Lily was able to constantly update her fans with her what's goings on, and thus attract more fans with the hype generated around it.
Much more recently, Rihanna has been using Twitter in order to update her fans regularly, whilst also building a larger audience.
Originally, Rihanna didn't run her Twitter account, it was run by her manager/record company, who used it solely for the purpose of posting dates and information on tours and singles etc. At this point, her account was stuck on around three million followers. Since then, Rihanna has taken control of the account, and has started 'tweeting' personal news and views. Her followers have risen to an astonishing twenty-six million followers. She has the fourth highest amount of followers on Twitter.
In turn, this enables her to promote her music to a much larger audience, which will no doubt leave her selling a lot more records.

A way in which it would be easy to create tie-ins between social networking sites and my artists would be to use Facebook. Simply, create a 'group' - which allows an unlimited amount of people to 'like'. With a description and promotion, more and more people would be able to see the group, and click on the video link which would be embeded in the group 'info' section.
